Top safari countries in Africa

Only a few things in life are as magical as an African safari. Many parts of the African continent boast lush grasslands, amazing lakes and plenty of wildlife.

As such, there are endless opportunities to enjoy a perfect safari.
Here are a few of the continent’s top countries to consider for an unforgettable safari:

Kenya

Kenya is one of Africa’s top safari destinations. The country is mostly known for the Masai Mara National Reserve. The natural attraction is home to astounding natural beauty. It also boasts rolling savanna grasslands and plenty of wildlife.

The Reserve is where you can spot the popular Wildebeest Migration which takes place from July through to October. During this time, more than two million animals migrate from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve.  

South Africa

Those who visit South Africa in search of an unforgettable safari experience are seldom left disappointed. The country is home to a number of safari destinations worth exploring.

These include the iconic Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s most popular safari destinations. It is home to a wide variety of wildlife and offers some of the best game viewing opportunities in the world.

The Park is the largest game reserve in South Africa and is known for being home to the Big 5. You can choose between different game drives, as well as thrilling walking safaris.

There is also the Madikwe Game Reserve which is located only a 3 and a half hour drive from Johannesburg. The 75 000-hectare sanctuary boasts impressive wildlife. It is also home to the Big 5, as well as other charismatic animals. Moreover, there are over 300 species of birds. You can choose between day and night game drives, or to simply immerse yourself in the rustling silence of bush walks.

Tanzania

As the starting point to the world-renowned wildebeest migration, Tanzania is effortlessly one of the continent’s best countries to consider for a safari.

The country is home to an abundance of wildlife, as well as a number of natural wonders worth exploring. These include the famous Serengeti National Park, as well as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Moreover, Tanzania’s birdlife is nothing short of impressive, thus making it the ideal destination for birding too.

Botswana

Botswana is home to some of the world’s finest safari camps. The destination also boasts more elephants than any other country. About 50 000 of them can be found at the popular Chobe National Park.

When on a safari in Botswana, expect huge tracts of wilderness and of course, plenty of wildlife. The country is also very intentional about sustainability and the preservation of Africa’s treasured wildlife. Other areas worth exploring within Botswana include the Okovango Delta and the Makgadikgadi Pan.

Uganda

Located in East Africa, the landlocked country of Uganda is abundant in natural beauty and wildlife. It is known for its chimpanzees, mountain gorillas as well as rare birds.

Worth visiting is the Queen Elizabeth National Park which is situated in the southwest part of Uganda. It is home to lush forests, lakes and a diverse range of wildlife.
