Tips to explore South Africa safely

Posted on 17 September 2024

As we celebrate Tourism Month, now’s the perfect time to reflect on the incredible diversity and rich heritage that make South Africa a top destination for travellers from all over the world. Last year, 8.5 million tourists visited the country; almost 50% more than in 2022. So, why not use September to explore our beautiful country safely and responsibly?

For many of us, the idea of taking a short left offers the perfect opportunity to rediscover the beauty in our backyard. However, while it’s thrilling to hit the road, ensuring your safety and security – both at home and during your travels – must be a priority.

Below, Sakina Ntuli, spokesperson at King Price Insurance, shares her top tips to travel safely like a tourist:

Be aware of your surroundings

Whether you’re in a bustling city or a quiet village, always be conscious of your environment. Avoid secluded areas after dark and keep your belongings close.

Stay connected

Inform friends or family of your travel plans and check in with them regularly. This is particularly important when travelling to remote areas.

Insure your portable possessions

Phones, cameras, laptops – these are items we can’t imagine travelling without. Unfortunately, they’re also prime targets for theft and can all-too-easily be accidentally damaged. Portable possession insurance plays a major role in protecting these valuables while you – and they – are on the go. If your portable possessions are covered correctly, you’ll have peace of mind if something happens to them.

Secure your home

Of course, while you’re out exploring, you must make sure that your home is protected too. Check that your buildings and home contents insurance are up to date. Also, review your policy’s terms on how long your home can be unoccupied while you travel. Many policies have limits on ‘unoccupied days’. Double-check this before you start your trip to avoid potential claim issues.
