Posted on 13 July 2024 By Nomvelo Masango

Travelling as a senior citizen allows you to relax, enjoy the fruit of your labour and visit the places you have always yearned to fully experience.

However, travelling can also be quite daunting and demanding as you get older. As such, intentional planning is needed. Comfort and health also have to be taken into careful consideration.

If you are a wanderlust-loving senior, here are some helpful travel tips worth considering:

Ensure that you plan ahead

Planning ahead is key. It will ensure that your trip runs as smoothly as possible. By planning early, you will have enough time to remember tasks which you may have forgotten to add to your to-do list. Plus, you will have access to certain perks such as early bird discounts.

Try your best to pack light

Packing light will serve to your advantage. Having light luggage will minimise the physical strain of having to carry heavy stuff. Pack essential items and try to eliminate unnecessary items as much as possible.

Accessibility and limitations

During the planning process, accessibility is an important factor to consider. Make sure that the accommodation you book has necessary facilities such as hand-rails,  elevators and wheelchair access.

Accommodate any physical and mental limitations by choosing destinations that are more accessible, as well as curating your itinerary to include attractions which suit your special needs.

Consult your doctor before travelling

Your health is of utmost importance. Before travelling, visit your doctor to get a medical check-up and to discuss any health concerns. If any medication is prescribed to you, ensure that you travel with it and take it consistently in the instructed dosage.

Beware of your surroundings

As you explore, it is absolutely important to beware of your surroundings. Criminals are always ready to take advantage of travellers, especially senior citizens. Always be on the lookout for any potential danger. It also helps to take the necessary safety precautions such as being mindful of your belongings and avoiding areas which are known for being dangerous.

Share travel details and keep in touch

Remember to share your travel details with loved ones. Include information such as arrival and departure times, as well as your itinerary.

Throughout your trip, stay in constant communication with your close family and friends via calls and texts.
