International borders might still be locked down for the foreseeable future, but we have our hopes set on travelling locally again within the year. And really, what’s not to love? South Africa’s scenery never ceases to amaze both coastal and inland.
With the tourism industry on its knees, travelling locally will be a much needed boost to help revive the economy and those who have already lost so much.
Take a look at these spectacular routes when planning that long overdue road trip:
1. Wild Coast, Eastern Cape
Running from East London in the south of the Eastern Cape and heading north to the border of KwaZulu-Natal, this route is drenched in history and culture. Perfect for the backpacker, hiker or camper, this area lives up to its name. Things to do include anything from browsing the quaint little towns to getting adventurous in nature. Go cliff jumping along the Mapuzi trail, off-road biking along the Transkei’s rugged terrain or take a cooling swim in the beautiful Morgans Bay.

2. Route 26, Free State
This treasure trove of charming farm communities starts off in Rouxville, eastern Free State. This route heads north, following the border of Lesotho along Route 26 until the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. Head into Lesotho for some skiing in the winter or camping in the summer. If you’re looking for an escape from the big city life, this is it. These humble places are not exactly aimed at tourists, but offer a welcome reprieve from the bright lights and loud sounds (as well as a break for your budget). Visit the vulture colony in Zastron, river raft in Clarens or stroll through the endless antique shops and art galleries in Rosendal. This route only spans about 400km so it’s the perfect weekend road trip.

3. Waterberg Meander, Limpopo
Head off from Marakele National Park north of Johannesburg and wander to Wonderkop Nature Reserve. The Waterberg region covers untouched savannah and is home to a host of wildlife reserves. Get your safari game back on or go horseback riding along one of its peaceful rivers. This bushveld getaway is also a bird watcher’s paradise, so take the binoculars with.
