Birds are interesting creatures. Learning more about them can be a fun and empowering experience. As such, birding is an enjoyable and rewarding pastime for many.
When you start to pay attention, you will notice that beautiful and different birds are everywhere. They’re in different sizes, make different sounds and have different colours.
If you would like to take up birding as a hobby, here are a few tips to consider:
Get a birding book or app
Birding books provide more information and make it easier for you to identify different birds. If you are equipped with information from a book, that will serve as your guide to recognizing different species through their looks and unique sounds. Technology has also made birding a whole lot easier as there are various informative and user-friendly birding apps to inform and guide you.
Be prepared to wake up early
Early morning is a great time to spot birds. As the saying goes, the early bird catches the worm. Birds are often hungry in the morning and have to go out and eat. It is for this reason that many eager birders can be found outside at dawn. Although birds can also be spotted at other times of the day, noon is not the best time as most birds quieten down after their busy mornings.
Invest in binoculars
Although observing birds with the naked eye in your immediate environment is a great start, a pair of entry-level binoculars will make things easier and enhance your overall experience.
Try different locations
The beauty of birding is that birds can be spotted pretty much everywhere, including your own backyard. However, if you are looking to expand your range while you grow as a birder, it is good to explore different habitats and locations. Alternate between city parks, places with tall trees, river banks and even open fields. That is how you will be exposed to different species of birds.
Respect nature and other birders
It is important to avoid making loud noises, as well as to not do anything that will overwhelm the birds. Additionally, do not get too close to a nest or attempt to touch it. Make it your aim to respect nature and be mindful of your environmental impact. If you encounter fellow birders, respect their rights and skill-levels while also being aware of your surroundings.
