It is often said that opposites attract, and planning a trip with a partner who has interests that differ from yours can be quite challenging. However, some open communication and compromise can ensure that an unforgettable trip takes place.

Here are our top three tips to balance travel interests when planning a romantic getaway:

Communicate honestly and openly

Open and honest communication goes a long way. When planning your trip, communicate your needs, dislikes and expectations openly. Be sure to also hear and understand the feelings and preferences of your partner.

Through communication, you can curate a trip that will be enjoyed by the both of you, regardless of different interests.

Be equally involved in the planning process

It is important for both parties to be involved in the planning process. Equal involvement will make it possible for the trip to reflect the preferences and interests of both you and your partner.

You can take turns planning your days. For example, let your partner plan a day that focuses on their interests (such as visiting museums or art galleries together), and the next day can be spent doing activities that reflect your interests (such as going to the beach or enjoying a spa day).

While it may be tempting to stick to what you know and prefer, travel provides the perfect chance to step into your partner’s shoes and to try new activities, even if they aren’t initially in your comfort zone. Who knows? Maybe your partner’s passions might rub off on you.

Make time for separate activities

Believe it or not, a little time apart also does the trick. Make sure your itinerary consists of a separate activity or two.

This affords you both the opportunity to do what you truly enjoy without feeling like you’re dragging your partner along.

In splitting for a while and reconnecting later, you will return with stories to share regarding your separate experiences, thus making your time together more enjoyable. When going your separate ways, remember to always take your safety into account.
