India’s Asiatic cheetah species, similar to Africa’s cheetah species, went extinct almost 70 years ago. India plans to reintroduce the big cat into their national reserves.
The first batch of 8 cheetahs was translocated to Kuno National Park in India from Namibia in September 2022. One of the cheetahs, Sasha, is currently undergoing treatment for kidney-related problems and dehydration, according to NDTV. ‘She is under observation and all other cheetah are fine.’ A team of wildlife experts has been consulted regarding her care and she is being monitored closely.
‘The first batch of 12 cheetahs are scheduled to be flown from South Africa to India in February 2023′. The cheetah will join the group who are already there at Kumo National Park. South Africa will send a dozen cheetah to India annually for the next ten years.
