We didn’t make Lusaka as planned. With light falling and a border crossing still ahead, we decided to pack it in for the day’s travel, and set up camp somewhere on the side of the road.
The Matriarch of a three-hut community was gracious enough to let us camp out in her backyard. We were an attraction, three big 4x4s, roof mounted tents, gerry-cans and all. There was quite a gathering by the time we sat around our fire.
That night there was a beautiful simplicity to the interactions that occurred. Two alien worlds meeting randomly, exchanging a shared night and separating forever again. There seemed to be no distinction between the locals and their visitors. All were content just to be. To share the space momentarily and marvel at each other’s mysteries, before moving into our lives once again.
