The APNR Southern Ground-Hornbill Project in the Greater Kruger is a dedicated establishment that focuses on the conservation and research of this specific winged creature. As research includes surveillance of these birds, a certain ground hornbill was not too keen on the invasion of privacy.
Kyle-Mark Middleton, from the project, has sent Latest Sightings a surveillance clip of these birds constructing a nesting area in a nearby tree. The Southern Ground-Hornbills have an interesting way of building their nests as they opt to stay close to the ground, mostly using tree trunks as their base.
At first, the birds seemed unaware of the camera perched by their home and were seen making their homestead nice and comfortable with found objects, such as leaves.
However, it became apparent that the hornbills became more aware of the foreign presence of the camera and investigated the unwelcome guest.
The hornbill began pecking at the camera, which caused the camera to become seriously damaged by the bird’s mighty beak. The attack was almost a comical affair, as the camera shows the bird staring directly at the lens while assaulting the equipment in protest to its very existence.
While the damage was costly, this made for spectacular footage till what extent a hornbill will go to protect his territory.
