A large pack of endangered African wild dogs were seen swimming across the swollen Klaserie River in the Greater Kruger National Park.
Many parts of the country have received heavy rainfall over the past week, with a national state of disaster declared in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal, the Northern Cape, and the North West.
In Kruger National Park, many roads still remain closed and SANParks have requested visitors to the park to contact their lodge and accommodation providers regarding road closures and recommended routes.
The Klasarie River in Limpopo hasn’t ‘had scenes like this in a decade’ Klaserie Drift Safari Camps posted on social media. ‘Almost 200mm of rain has flooded the river in just a couple of days and finally brought much-needed water to the African bush.’
With the river having overflowed its banks, wild animals still have to make their way through the park. A large pack of African wild dogs took the risk to doggy paddle through the strong current and relocate to the other side of the shore.
This is an extremely rare sighting, especially when considering that there are fewer than 600 African Wild Dogs left in South Africa.
