Footage of a male lion hunting and successfully killing a hyena cub was shared on Latest Sightings.
Tanisha Rach, a 20-year-old student, was driving back to Phabeni Gate after spending a day in the Kruger National Park. Before reaching the exit, she and her friends spotted a big male lion ‘lazing about on the roadside.’
She shared that ‘while sitting with the lion, a shadow appeared [on] the road ahead. At first, [they] were unable to identify the figure. As it got closer, it became clear that the figure was a young hyena, oblivious to the danger it was getting itself into.’
The friend group watched as the lion immediately switched to hunting mode. Despite the impulse to protect the little cub and interfere, they knew they needed to respect the ‘natural balance of the environment.’ Within an instant, the lion launched himself at the cub and ‘proceeded to deliver a fatal blow.’
Rach acknowledges how lucky she was to be able to experience and capture such a rare sighting.
