A newborn giraffe’s first steps turned into a life-or-death struggle when it crossed paths with a lioness and a hyena.
Filmed in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy of Masai Mara, Kenya as wildlife photographer Don Heyneke and safari consultant Rustom Framjee watched as a newborn giraffe, barely 30 minutes old, was thrust into a fight for survival.
From the start, the vulnerable calf had to dodge relentless advances from the lioness while its mother tried desperately to shield it. The tense pursuit pushed the giraffes to a riverbed, where a tragic twist unfolded: the mother accidentally knocked her calf down a cliff, leaving it stranded. Despite her relentless efforts to protect it, and the calf’s brave attempts to rise after each attack, the journey ultimately ended in heartbreak, with the newborn succumbing to exhaustion. This powerful footage is a sobering glimpse into the raw, unforgiving nature of the wild.
