While not common prey to lions, a seemingly injured crocodile was deemed an opportunity a pride of lions could not pass up. An astonishing moment was documented on Latest Sightings in the Busanga Plains region of Kafue National Park in Zambia, as a mass of yellow fur and claws pawed and gnawed the crocodile.
The video shows how the pride encounters the crocodile and uses a variety of methods to discover the best way to kill the prey. Pulling and prodding to see where the meatiest part is to bite and feast, a lioness determines the juiciest part to bite.
While the crocodile’s back is covered with tough scales, its underbelly is fleshy and perfect for chowing down. The lioness pinned the crocodile on the back, much to his shock, and the lions started feeding.
The pride also has several juvenile lions, so this crocodile is more than likely their first encounter with this colossal reptile. This is certainly a valuable lesson for juvenile lions on how to capture and kill a vicious animal. As the creature is large in size, the pride has captured a meal that is likely to keep them full and fed for a few days.
Interestingly, the footage also shows a collared lion. These collars are usually used to track and monitor lions’ activity for research purposes. This surveillance assists as an anti-poaching measure. It was an incredible kill and certainly valuable data for the researchers to unpack!
