Unusual sighting: kudu bull seen thrashing horns through mud

Recently, the team at Londolozi Game Reserve in the Sabi Sands came across an unusual – but not unheard of – sighting. A kudu bull was repeatedly digging in the mud with his horns, and rangers are not exactly sure why.

‘Thrashing horns through mud and water, this large kudu bull is doing [this] for one of many reasons,’ Londolozi said. ‘Either as a thermoregulatory means hoping the cool mud removes excess heat, practicing his fighting moves and strengthening his neck muscles, ridding the horns of parasites such as the Horn-borer Moth’s larvae, or to draw attention to his horns and how impressive they are to would-be on-lookers. We don’t know for sure.’
