A picture-perfect moment happened for lucky visitors to MalaMala Game Reserve when 20 lions lined up along the riverbed for a drink.
LatestSightings.com founder and CEO Nadav Ossendryver was on a morning game drive, searching for the elusive leopard, when he sighted elephants bathing in Sand River. They stopped to watch ‘and then as if it were scripted, movement in the background! Two ears appeared behind the elephants. We immediately knew it was a lion. That lion came down the ridge and started drinking right ahead .’
The Kambula Lion Pride came down one by one to the river. He shared that ‘it was all so perfect. Twenty lions, drinking from the pool of water in the river bed. Because we had chosen to park right in front of the pool of water, we had the best seats in the house. But also, we later realised, the worst seats as well.’
Sitting in the thick wet river sand meant their game vehicle got stuck in the mud. They tried following the pride as they moved on, but the car wouldn’t budge. ‘The rest of the guides found it pretty funny. A group of tourists stuck in the mud, surrounded by 20 lions!’
The camp manager eventually sent help to ‘get them out of the sticky situation.’
