A Chacma baboon, often referred to as Raygun, was attacked, dismembered and set alight in the footage. The footage also shows a number a number of students chasing the baboon in question. The NSPCA has offered a hefty reward, coming in at a whopping R20 000, to anyone who has information about the individuals involved in the crime.
Speculations have been made regarding the perpetrators, which involve a number of students from the school. This brutal killing is theorised around the practice of witchcraft and the superstition surrounding these animals.
The dismemberment of the baboon included its head, hands, feet, and heart. The body was then set on fire after receiving a torturous experience with its killer or killers. As a close-knit community, the matter and individuals involved have been difficult to pinpoint, and the investigation is much more challenging to solve.
SABC has reported that the NSPCA has made it their mission to provide education and information to prevent these discerning events from happening any further. The NSPCA spokesperson states:
“We will go to areas where people may encounter wildlife to provide some education and awareness on the steps to take if they do feel threated by wildlife and how they can respond.”
