Elusive Jimmy is Collared (again)

Posted on 3 May 2010

Simon’s Town baboon Jimmy, who is a member of the waterfall troop, was re-collared on the 29th of April 2010. This was after he managed to remove the collar that was fitted to him by removing the nuts that held the collar in place with his fingers! See City Slicker Baboons.

This collar is fitted by researchers enabling them to identify how best to manage him as he has become a habitual raider. Jimmy is having a hard time. The dominant male in the troop, Bongo, is dominating him. This has resulted in Jimmy receiving a superficial slash on his shoulder. Jimmy was captured in a cage by Dr Justin O Rain of the University of Cape Town’s Baboon Research Unit. Bongo aggressively rushed the capture team when Jimmy was in the cage. He was immobilized , a new collar fitted, and he was released back on the mountain.
