Following the vicious attack of a crocodile in a nearby river, the K9 Patroller, Ben, has lost his life while on duty. IOL has reported that the furry protector ran to the river to quench his thirst, where he was captured and killed by a crocodile.

He was conducting an exercise with his handler, which he had partnered with for eight years when he was attacked. While nearby rangers made various attempts to save the animal, their efforts were futile, and Ben lost his life from the injuries.

The SANParks Honorary Rangers have also made a statement regarding the challenges these animals and rangers face when it comes to their job:

“Committed to preserving our precious wildlife, the K9 units and their handlers face numerous challenges, often placing themselves in danger to safeguard these lands. This loss reminds us of the bravery and sacrifice involved in protecting our precious natural heritage.”

Ben was a dedicated member of the SANParks anti-poaching efforts. The Citizen has claimed that members who have worked with Ben described him as one of the best on the team for tracking poachers.
