The Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital at the University of Pretoria (UP) received the cutest patient to conduct life-saving surgery. This five-month-old rhino, who was indicated to be orphaned, was brought to the facility because of severe abdominal pain and a refusal to consume milk.
These symptoms indicated something more drastic and life-threatening could be at play here, and a closer look was needed to ensure his safety and survival. After extensive testing by the medical professionals, they found a serious gastrointestinal blockage in his smaller intestines.
The severity of his condition called for immediate surgery on the premises. The surgical team included a wide variety of medical professionals to ensure the utmost care for this young patient regarding this life-altering surgery.
This rhino’s recovery is being closely monitored, and the necessary post-surgery medication and fluids are being administered. IOL has reported that Professor Katja Koeppel, a wildlife expert and surgeon, has commented on the case:
The team discovered that the calf was suffering from a colon impaction, a condition commonly seen in horses.”… “The blockage in the large intestine was successfully removed, and the small intestine was decompressed. The surgical site was then carefully closed. The calf recovered well from anaesthesia and was soon alert and hungry.”
