The Born Free Foundation’s Big Cat Sanctuary, operating within the Shamwari Private Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, has achieved a significant feat. The Global Federation of Animals Sanctuaries (GFAS) has accredited it as a true animal sanctuary.

This organisation is the leading body that determines whether wildlife operations are legitimate animal sanctuaries. A number of standards must be in place. With responsible and humane animal management and care, this Big Cat Sanctuary is a must-visit for travellers looking to encounter African wildlife ethically and sustainably.

The Born Free Manager, Catherine Gillson, has commented on how proud she is of the accreditation, which will create much-needed awareness of the threats these big cats face.

She states, “We at Born Free, Shamwari, are so proud to have this accreditation from GFAS as a genuine sanctuary. Our primary goal is the holistic well-being of our rescued big cats and creating awareness about the threats these creatures face in the wild…”
