Two men were sentenced for smuggling rhino horns worth millions

Initially arrested in 2018, the two suspects were found guilty of smuggling 27 rhino horns; the men have finally been sentenced to 15 years in jail. The crimes included exporting, possession, receiving, and transporting rhino horns.

The suspects were bound for Vietnam but have been caught and arrested at OR Tambo airport. The two boxes in question, which contained the illegal substance, were said to weigh nearly 30 kg and were estimated to be valued at R2.9 million.

Colonel Katlego Mogale, the spokesperson for the Gauteng Hawks, details how these men were caught at processed. He states, “They were granted bail of R2,000 each on August 20 2018. While on bail they both absconded in September 2019 and were traced and rearrested in 2020 in Vhuwani”.
