Given the ever-increasing number of local and international accolades from industries ranging from viniculture to tourism and travel (to name a few), there’s no denying that the reputation of our province’s wine regions has reached the far corners of the globe.
Cape Town’s favourite regal rooikat was spotted strolling through the vineyards of Wildekrans Wine Estate last week.
Known for being a particularly elusive wildcat, spotting a Cape caracal is undoubtedly a big deal. Taking to Facebook, Wildekrans wrote that it “just had to share this incredible sighting”.
The shy caracal, or rooikat in Afrikaans, is a medium-sized rufous-fawn cat with distinctive tufted black ears, a creamy underbelly with faded orange spots, and long legs. Its face has exquisite markings and light green to orange eyes, making it a sight to behold.
Take a look:
Besides a potential caracal sighting, the mixed farming operation turned international award-winning wine-producing estate offers a tranquil base from which to rejuvenate and explore the hidden charms of the Overberg region.
From mountain bike trails and horse riding to gourmet country-style dining, wine tastings and unparalleled mountain views, there’s as much (or as little) to do on the estate as you please.
Speaking of award-winning, Wildekrans Wine Estate recently announced that its Wildekrans 2011 Pinotage garnered an impressive score of over 90 points from the judging panel of the Absa Vintage Awards of Excellence 2024 amid the over 38 exceptional wines vying for top honours.
So the next time you head out to the beautiful Botrivier Valley, be sure to ‘keep your eyes peeled and your cameras ready when you visit [the estate] – nature always has a show in store!’ as Wildekrans says.
